Events: Panel Discussions

The LMS Early Career Researcher Continuing Professional Development sessions are free online panel discussions, which are aimed at Early Career Researchers and run by the LMS Early Career Research Committee. Each sessions focuses on a particular element of career development for Early Career Researchers.

Session 1) Academic job search Thursday 7th December 2023 at 12pm (GMT)

Panellists: Alexander Kasprzyk (Nottingham; Chair), Sabine Boegli (Durham), Chris Bowman-Scargill (York), Ana Rita Pires (Edinburgh) and Lewis Topley (Bath).

This panel covered the basics of applying for academic jobs (what material you need, where to find jobs, etc), and offered the opportunity to ask more detailed questions.  The target audience included both finishing PhD students and postdocs looking for their next position.

This panel covered the basics of applying for academic jobs (what material you need, where to find jobs, etc), and offered the opportunity to ask more detailed questions.  The target audience included both finishing PhD students and postdocs looking for their next position.

This panel covered the basics of applying for grants and fellowships, and offered the opportunity to ask more detailed questions. The target audience was postdocs applying for a first grant, and PhD students planning ahead.

Session 3) Writing and publication slides from the session on Thursday 19th January at 12pm (GMT) will be available soon.

This panel discussed aspects of writing and publication, and offered the opportunity to ask more detailed questions.  The target audience was early career researchers at all stages.

Session 4) Building your research community slides from the session on Monday 6th March at 10.00am (GMT) will be available soon.

This panel discussed how to find and build your research community, including how to find collaborators, and offered the opportunity to ask more detailed questions.  The target audience was later year PhD students and early postdocs.

Session 5) Applying for jobs in industry slides from the session on Thursday 30th March at 12pm (BST) will be available soon.

This panel discussed how to find a first job in industry (broadly defined), and offered the opportunity to ask more detailed questions.
