We are delighted that the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is being held in the UK (University of Bath) this month (11-22 July 2019). Teams of six high school students, from 114 countries will sit two tough four and a half hour papers, with three questions on each paper.
The team of six to represent the UK was chosen after a training camp held in Leeds in May. The team is: Alex Darby (Sutton Grammar School for Boys); Liam Hill (Gosforth Academy), Thomas Hillman (St Albans School); George Mears (George Abbott School); Benedict Randall Shaw (Westminster School) and Aron Thomas (Dame Alice Owen’s School). The Team Leader is Dr Dominic Yeo (University of Oxford) and the Deputy Leader is Freddie Illingworth (Emmanuel College, Cambridge). The London Mathematical Society would like to wish the team every success
The IMO began in 1959, for countries from the Soviet bloc. Other countries joined gradually from the mid 1960s. This is the third time the event has been hosted in the UK, with the1979 event held in London and the 2002 event in Glasgow. More information about the event and historical details are available here.
