European Mathematical Society Prizes 2020
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to congratulate the winners of this year’s European Mathematical Society (EMS) Prizes. The 2020 winners include two LMS Whitehead Prizewinners: Professor Jack Thorne FRS (University of Cambridge and also Dr Ana Caraiani (Imperial College London).
The prize is awarded to ‘young researchers under 35 years of age of European nationality or working in Europe in recognition of excellent contributions in mathematics’. The complete list of winners is:
LMS 2017 Whitehead Prize winner among new Fellows of the Royal Society
The Royal Society has released details of its newly-appointed Fellows, among whom were LMS 2017 Whitehead Prize winner Jack Thorne (University of Cambridge), Professor Ehud Hrushovski (University of Oxford) and Professor Andrew Stuart (California Institute of Technology). Others elected included computer scientist Professor David Harel (Weizmann Institute of Science) and Professor Hugh Osborn (University of Cambridge). Professor Wendelin Werner (ETH Zurich) was elected a Foreign Member.
LMS Continues to Support MathsJax
The London Mathematical Society is delighted to announce that it will continue to support the MathsJax project. The core of the project is developing a state of the art JavaScript platform for displaying mathematics notation.
Professor Jan Saxl: A leading figure in algebra
It is with sadness that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) has learnt of the death of Professor Jan Saxl. Profesor Saxl was a longstanding member of the LMS, joining the Society in 1976.
First woman appointed Gresham Professor of Geometry
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) is delighted to learn that Society member Sarah Hart has been appointed Gresham Professor of Geometry. The position is thought to be the oldest mathematical chair in Britain and Professor Hart is the first woman to be appointed in its 423-year history. Many distinguished mathematicians have held the position previously including Henry Briggs, Robert Hooke, Karl Pearson, Sir Roger Penrose, and John D Barrow.
First Atiyah Fellows Announced
The LMS UK-Lebanon Atiyah Fellowship scheme was set up in memory of Sir Michael Atiyah OM (1929-2019). The LMS is delighted to announce that the first two fellowships, for the academic year 2020-21, have been awarded to Professor Mark Wildon, Royal Holloway, University of London and Professor Ahmad Sabra, American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon.
Organisations join forces to establish a Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange
The Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS) has been set up in a new collaboration between the Isaac Newton Institute (INI) (and its knowledge exchange arm, the Newton Gateway to Mathematics), the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN).
John Horton Conway (1937-2020)
It is with great sadness that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) reports the death of John Horton Conway who was one of the most celebrated British mathematicians of the second half of the 20th century. Having made substantial contributions to widely different areas of mathematics, Conway was elected to Honorary Membership of the Society in 2015, the 150th Anniversary Year of the LMS.
